Haney Howell is an emeritus professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., where he started the broadcast journalism major in 1988.

Howell began in radio while in high school and worked at numerous stations in the South. After a hitch in the U.S. Air Force, he joined CBS News in New Delhi in 1971 and transferred to Saigon where he covered Indochina and South Asia for CBS Television and Radio and was the last reporter/bureau chief in Saigon.

After the war, he worked as a charge editor at ABC Radio News in New York. He spent four years as a reporter and field anchor at KUSA and KCNC in Denver. In 1983 he returned to CBS News in New York and worked as a television producer.

After a two-year stint as executive producer for CONUS in Minneapolis, Howell switched careers and joined the faculty at Winthrop. He freelance anchored at WRHI/WRHM in Rock Hill and WBT Radio in Charlotte and worked on the weekend assignment desk at WSOC.

He joined the board of RTDNAC in 1989 and served as contest chairman for many years.
