RTDNAC board member Haney Howell, an associate professor in the Department of Mass Communications at Winthrop University, is stepping down from full-time teaching in May, he announced Dec. 19.
"It’s been a spectacular ride, with much credit to many of the folks in RTDNAC." Haney said. "This does not mean you won't see me! I hope to stay on the board in some capacity, and I'll still teach a class or two each year."
Howell has headed RTDNAC’s awards program for several years, and has been a valuable asset to the group.
"His counsel and perspective are always to the point at hand," former RTDNAC President Lee Brown said. "Haney is simply the best. When someone with his credentials speaks, you would be wise to listen and learn. And that's true not just for his students, but also for those of us who have been in the working world for years."
In 1988, Howell joined Winthrop, where he teaches broadcast journalism and writing. Prior to that, he spent seven years with CBS News and was also a producer and charge editor for ABC Radio News in New York and a reporter and field anchor for KUSA-TV and KCNC-TV in Denver. His experience also includes a host of other work for TV and radio.
He received the Public Service Award from the Radio Television Digital News Directors Association and also received the Lifetime Membership Award from the South Carolina Broadcasters Association in January 2011 for his career in radio and television and his work with South Carolina stations and students.
RTDNAC's "Best Student Reporter" award is named for him.
