Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
News Services is the official media relations office for the University. The goal is to plug Carolina's people and programs into the news of the day to position the University as a leading research institution. Staff members collaborate closely with campus communicators and are on the front lines of public affairs work involving breaking news and complex issues involving the campus community. They meet the University's media relations needs by writing, editing and distributing news releases, advisories, tip sheets and photographs, packaging news for the Web (including managing the University's YouTube Channel) and other new media, as well as pitching stories and faculty experts for local, national and international print, broadcast and Web outlets. The studio manager's primary role is to coordinate the successful operation of the Carolina News Studio, a partnership between University Relations and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The studio officially launche! d in 2008 as a dedicated resource for live and recorded TV and radio interviews with faculty and other newsmakers from the University community. Part of the successful operation of the studio involves aggressively and proactively marketing its availability and the expertise of the University's faculty on timely topics with TV and radio producers. The emphasis on broadcast media reflects the priority that University Relations places on enhancing Carolina's national broadcast coverage. This position also functions as a key member of the University Relations Communications team producing multimedia content including video as part of the University's overall communication efforts. As content producer, shoot video (interviews and b-roll), log videotape, write the story, and edit the final piece using Final Cut Pro. Or edit tape shot by someone else to University Relations' specifications. The position also manages the University's YouTube Channel and the News Services section of! the campus ITunes webpage. That includes uploading and sharin! g video content, organizing YouTube channel videos by creating new playlists, refreshing the main feature video and "favoriting" other videos of interest to University audiences. This position is being recruited for at the Advanced level under the Career Banding program. The hiring range for this position is $55,200 - $65,000. The salary grade equivalent is 73. Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., but on call after hours to handle studio interview requests or breaking news Must have the ability to learn new video and multimedia production skills (including operating a high-quality TV camera, microphones, and lights) and techniques in a rapidly changing environment. Must have the ability to apply knowledge of equipment and related software (like Final Cut Pro) and programs to produce excellent content, as well as to guide and/or train others. Sound understanding of Associated Press style.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, communications, marketing or English, from an accredited four-year college or university. Four or more years of applicable experience in journalism, communications, public relations or management - or an equivalent combination of training or experience. Thorough understanding of news and communications in all media (print, broadcast and social). Ability to expect and address the needs of the news media. Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods involved with planning, writing and executing a sound communications plan with measurable goals. Ability to evaluate, synthesize and summarize a large volume of complex and sometimes technical information prepared by others into a format a general public audience can understand.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:
Physical effort required for this position is not comparable to most office positions. This position is required to go back and forth between News Services and the news studio in the journalism school, often on short notice. And the position is required to take broadcast equipment to on-site shoots and set it up.
